Penacook Indians used to trap in the region and fish in the “Waters of the Wild Goose” - Lake Sunapee. Still, the lake has exceptionally clear, unpolluted water for swimming (there are three public beaches), boating and fishing, and a few minutes away is a little college town, New London, with attractive shops, a summer stock theater and a restaurant so good that folks from Boston frequently drive for two hours just to eat there, then turn around and drive home.
To those who like their summer respite low‐key, that is precisely its attraction the liveliest happenings are likely to be chicken barbecues, band concerts and boat shows. Some say Sunapee hasn't kept up with the times. It's the kind of area where the phone books remain in the outdoor phone booths all year long-and the pages are scarcely dogeared. There are only about 1,000 beds for tourists-in motels, inns and cottages-within 20 miles of the harbor town of Sunapee, which is on the western shore of the lake. Local people and the heavily Bostonian crowd of vacation homeowners outnumber transient visitors many times over. Unlike Winnipesaukee, its larger and better known sister‐lake, Sunapee (nine miles long and three wide) never developed the range of activities and hubbub needed to attract a busy family trade and become a modern resort. After the Depression, the area was rejuvenated by out‐of‐staters who put up second homes, mostly small cottages, but with the change came the quieting down of Sunapee. Most of the big hotels near the lake closed. People came to favor moving vacations: a few days here, a few days there. When the automobile began to dominate, the trains and boats slowed and then stopped altogether. The Lake Sunapee area was a bustling summer community.

This railroad‐steamboat combination was the best way to reach the resorts right into the 1920's among the regulars who traveled that route were Gov. At Newbury, huge steam?ats would meet the trains and shuttle passengers and their trunks to the various hostelries around the water's edge.
They would check into one or another big resort hotel, sign up for the meal plan and stay put until fall.įor many, the last stop was the station at Newbury, at the southern tip of Lake Sunapee, in the western part of the state. A century ago the arrival of warm weather in the Northeast set an affluent breed of city folk in Boston and New York to packing huge trunks and traveling by train to New Hampshire for the summer.
